Video apps see growth from Open Graph integration

Posted: 04 Apr 2012 02:11 PM PDT

Facebook today shared stats that show how Open Graph integration has increased traffic, sign-ups and activity among video applications like Vevo, Viddy, Izlesene and Dailymotion.

These apps mostly live off-Facebook, but the addition of automatic publishing to Ticker, Timeline and News Feed has provided new opportunities for users to discover them. The social network continues to push the idea that Open Graph is not about bringing the entire web onto Facebook, but integrating Facebook into other sites and mobile devices and letting more companies reap the benefits.

Music video platform Vevo had early success with its Timeline app, but growth has accelerated significantly since Vevo switched to Facebook-only login in March. Here are some key stats from Facebook:

  • 200 percent increase in daily registrations since the change to Facebook-only registration
  • 600 percent increase in published actions on Facebook from February to March
  • 130 percent increase in referrals from Facebook to VEVO from February to March
  • 60 percent of Facebook referral traffic comes from Open Graph stories

According to our AppData tracking service, Vevo had 170,000 monthly active users on Jan. 1. Now the app has 750,000 MAU. Although Vevo did not share a breakdown of where activity was occurring, it’s worth noting that the company added a Facebook canvas experience last month for users to search for and watch videos directly from the social network.

Viddy is a mobile application best explained as "Instagram for videos." Users can shoot 15-second videos with their iPhone, add visual effects and share the clips on Facebook. Since integrating with timeline in February, 1.5 million people joined Viddy, and the app has gone from 60,000 MAU to more than 920,000. Celebrities like Snoop Dogg, who use Viddy's Timeline app along with the Facebook subscribe feature, have helped popularize the app. According to Facebook, Viddy has seen:

  • 2x increase in average daily sign-ups since integrating Open Graph
  • 9 million interactions with Viddy content on Facebook

Viddy shared the following additional statistics with us:

  • 90 percent of new users join the Viddy app through Facebook (up from 25% prior to Timeline integration)
  • 45 percent of all uploaded videos are now shared via Facebook since the integration

Turkish video site Izlesene makes frequent appearances in our AppData charts as one of the fastest growing applications. Since launching its Open Graph integration in September 2011, MAU has grown from 250,000 to more than 6.5 million. Izlesene has also experienced a 3x increase in the number of videos people view per day. According to Facebook, Izlesene ran A/B tests to find the right design for the site and copy for the auth dialog that would lead more people to add the application. For example, it added the Facebook Facepile plug-in and more context about permissions it requests.

Dailymotion is a video sharing site that added Open Graph functionality in January. The app had less than 680,000 MAU when it launched Timeline integration at F8. It peaked in mid-March with 8.8 million MAU, but has since dropped down to 5.4 million MAU. Daily active users are on the rise again this week. Representatives from Dailymotion didn't tell us exactly what contributed to the fluctuations, but said there were some tests and promotions last month that could have had an effect.

For now, the app only shares stories about what users watch, not videos they add or other actions they take on the site. Even with the limited range of actions, more than 2 million Dailymotion stories are published to the social network on an average day, Facebook says. Dailymotion also says Facebook-connected users tend to engage more with content on the site than non-connected users, but it did not provide numbers for this.

Facebook did not include Hulu in its roundup. The app, which is available from the Facebook canvas and Hulu.com, uses Open Graph to publish the TV shows and video clips users watch. Hulu hasn’t seen the same momentum as some other Timeline apps, but this could be related to external factors, like how many shows it makes exclusive for Hulu Plus subscribers or changes in show air dates made to accommodate professional sports seasons and tournaments. Hulu also doesn’t offer some of the most buzzed about shows that are currently in season, like “Mad Men” or “Game of Thrones,” which limits its potential.

There are a few changes Hulu could make to maximize engagement with its app. For example, it could give users the ability to tag friends they’re watching a show with or leave comments at different points during an episode, similar to what SoundCloud does with songs. Hulu should consider adding new actions besides “watch,” for example  ”rate” or “favorite.” The app could also benefit from better summaries of what users watch over time. Currently, the streaming TV service simply displays the total videos users watched in a given time period. Instead, Hulu could highlight a user’s most popular show and display how many episodes of each series a user watched or how many seasons a user completed.

Survey suggests Facebook advertising benchmarks: $0.80 CPC, 0.041 percent CTR

Posted: 04 Apr 2012 11:20 AM PDT

Facebook advertisers see an average cost per click of $0.80 and average clickthrough rate of 0.041 percent, according to a survey released today by Social Fresh.

The survey of 347 advertisers found that respondents who worked for an agency had higher average CTR than vendors and marketers who worked directly for brands. Advertisers who promoted content on Facebook saw higher CTR and lower CPC than those who drove traffic to third-party sites. This information can help other marketers benchmark their own Facebook ad performance.

For advertisers driving traffic to Facebook pages and apps, average CPC was $0.70. Ads leading off-Facebook averaged $1.08 CPC. This supports findings from TBG Digital, which found that even when CTR was the same, Facebook charged an average 45 percent less per click for ads that kept users within its ecosystem than those that didn't. TBG Digital's report, however, did not provide actual numbers for CTR or CPC.

Social Fresh's survey found that respondents who work for an agency reported the highest clickthrough rates at 0.049 percent, while brand employees had average clickthrough rates of 0.038 percent. It’s unclear whether the disparity is the result of differing tactics, budgets or category being advertised. Facebook ad performance can vary by industry, which might have affected the results here. It’s also possible agencies produce stronger creative or have more experience with bid-based ad platforms.

The 21 percent of respondents who worked with a Facebook ad representative had an average CPC of $0.78, compared to $0.83 for those who didn't. Advertisers who worked with Facebook reps also reported a slightly higher average CTR at 0.05 percent. Advertisers who did not work with a rep and averaged a 0.04 percent CTR.

According to Social Fresh, a social media education company, the survey respondents represented a range of industries including software, retail, e-commerce and consumer package goods. There were 43 Fortune 500 brands represented in the survey. Respondents have an average 8.3 years of marketing experience and two years of Facebook advertising experience. CPC and CTR data was self-reported.

The full Social Fresh report, including more information about marketers' goals, targeting, creative and ad management, can be downloaded here.

Then there were a few entertainment-related Open Graph apps on the list: video sharing site Dailymotion and Turkish video site İzlesene, as well as Flixster's Timeline app, which allows users to rate and review films.

Document sharing site Scribd and file sharing site Dropbox, which both Facebook login, made the list. A handful of games grew by the hundreds of thousands, including the Arabic game,  المزرعة السعيد. An iPad app, MyPad for iPad, was popular, as well as professional networking app that posts activity to Timeline, BranchOut. Facebook open sources mobile browser test suite to promote HTML5 development

Posted: 03 Apr 2012 05:01 PM PDT

Facebook has open sourced Ringmark, its browser test suite for building apps on the mobile web, according to a post on the company’s HTML5 blog today.

The effort is part of Facebook's push to promote HTML5 development. One of the major challenges with HTML5 development right now is fragmentation in mobile browser capabilities, but Ringmark lets developers see instantly whether their apps will be able to run on a given mobile browser.

The social network has an interest in helping HTML5 become a more viable platform for developers to build upon since it cannot monetize native iOS or Android apps. Many developers see HTML5 as inferior to native mobile experiences, but as HTML5 improves, there is more likelihood that developers will adopt it and then Facebook can benefit from the use of Credits in these apps.

Promoting HTML5 is also Facebook's way of supporting a potential new wave of mobile development.

"For those that are building with the web today, it’s a major hurdle to learn native technologies like Objective-C and Java," Facebook engineer Matt Kelly wrote in the blog post announcing the news. "We hope that an improved mobile web can unlock a large contingency of developers that could, and will, be developing for mobile."

When the company introduced Ringmark at Mobile World Congress in February, there were more than 400 tests available. Now that the project is open sourced, any developer can contribute tests and provide value for others in the community. The company hopes that over time this will help mobile browser vendors build browsers that better serve developer needs and bring better apps and games to consumers.

"This is the beginning of a process, starting with open sourcing the tests," Kelly wrote. "As we continue to build, we’ll continue to open source even more of this work."

Facebook also says it will soon contribute Ringmark tests to the Core Mobile Web Platform Community Group in the W3C. The group is an industry-wide consortium including manufacturers, carriers and developers that aim to push HTML5 forward with a single set of standards.

Developers can view and contribute to the Ringmark code here and here. The test suite can be found here.

Facebook serves Yahoo with counter-suit claiming infringement on 10 patents

Posted: 03 Apr 2012 12:07 PM PDT

Facebook has responded to Yahoo's patent infringement suit with counterclaims that Yahoo infringes upon 10 of the social network's patents, according to All Things D.

The company asks the court to dismiss Yahoo's case and instead find Yahoo guilty of infringing on Facebook's patents. Additionally, Facebook is requesting that Yahoo be prevented from further infringing on patents and that the Internet company pay damages and legal fees.

This is a strong response to what many saw as a cheap shot by Yahoo. Yahoo took similar actions against Google before the search company's initial public offering in 2004, and collected 1 percent of Google stock worth about $230 million at Google's IPO price. However, the counter-suit could result in more costs and potentially delay the social network's IPO.

"While we are asserting patent claims of our own, we do so in response to Yahoo's short-sighted decision to attack one of its partners and prioritize litigation over innovation," Facebook general counsel Ted Ullyot said in a statement.

Facebook claims Yahoo infringes on the following patents it has been granted by the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office:

  • "Generating a Feed of Stories Personalized for Members of a Social Network"
  • "Tagging Digital Media"
  • "Headline Posting Algorithm"
  • "Method for Enabling a User to Fetch a Specific Information Item from a Set of Information Items and a System for Carrying Out Such a Method"
  • "Customizing Database Information for Presentation with Media Selections" "System and Method for Dynamic Profiling of Users in One-to-One Applications" "System and Method for Dynamic Profiling of Users in One-to-One Applications and for Validating User Rules"
  • "Architectures, Systems, Apparatus, Methods, and Computer- Readable Medium for Providing Recommendations to Users and Applications Using Multidimensional Data"
  • "System for Controlled Distribution of User Profiles Over a Network"
  • U.S. Patent No. 8,150,913, which was granted today and is also titled "System for Controlled Distribution of User Profiles Over a Network"

Along with the counter-claims, Facebook denied allegations that it infringes upon 10 of Yahoo's patents related to advertising, privacy, customization, messaging and social networking. Yahoo filed its lawsuit in mid-March for Facebook to be permanently prevented from further infringing on Yahoo's patents and to pay damages and legal fees.

[Update: Yahoo said in a statement, "We have only just received Facebook's answer and counterclaims, but on their face we believe they are without merit and nothing more than a cynical attempt to distract from the weakness of its defense."]

Involver adds visual tool for producing custom Facebook apps without code

Posted: 03 Apr 2012 11:00 AM PDT

Social marketing platform Involver today introduced a visual tool for building Facebook applications and other customizable experiences.

The Visual SML is an addition to Involver's Social Markup Language, a system that enables front-end developers to code apps more efficiently. Now with the visual tool, coding isn't necessary. Marketers can drag and drop widgets, like videos, photo galleries or contest forms, onto a canvas that can be used on Facebook tabs, websites and mobile landing pages.

Using a technology platform like Involver could help large brands and agencies save time and money by making development more efficient. For example, Involver manages changes in the Facebook API, so when Facebook tweaks its code, Involver updates SML accordingly. Developers can maintain the same SML tags and avoid having to fix their existing applications. The cost of a yearly license, however, prevents the platform from being an option for small businesses or agencies that don’t regularly produce apps for their clients.

Companies like Vitrue and Wildfire also offer drag-and-drop tools, but Roland Smart, Sr. Director of Product Marketing at Involver, says the difference with Involver's product is how designers and front-end switch between the visual tool and SML code.

"[For brands and agencies] there are fundamental differences between the marketing side of the house and the development side of the house," Smart says. "Now they can both be in the same platform and work together."

Smart says the platform is useful for large companies that might have front end developers on the corporate side, but not among the regional offices. Corporate can use the SML code and the regional marketers can use the visual tool.

Interestingly, Facebook is a client of Involver's. The social network uses SML for some of its applications, including the Super Bowl Ad Meter it released in partnership with USA Today. That app, which let users rate Super Bowl commercials, integrated Open Graph and was accessible from multiple Facebook pages, USAToday.com and the mobile web.

‘The Simpsons,’ LMFAO, sports, BlueStacks, more on this week’s top 20 growing Facebook pages

Posted: 03 Apr 2012 09:57 AM PDT

"The Simpsons" topped our list of the fastest growing Facebook pages this week. There was also "Titanic," the band LMFAO, several sports stars, a few blog-related pages, Miracle-Gro and Android app player for Windows PC BlueStacks.

Pages on our list this week grew from between 285,000 to 1.9 million Likes. We compile this list with our PageData tool, which tracks page growth across Facebook.

20.   ThaiMarketing 480,837 455,786 +22,077 +285,040

As mentioned, "The Simpsons" topped our list with almost 2 million new Likes. A few other movies made the list as a result of what appeared to be page consolidations, as the Likes spiked tremendously over a period of a few days. In the case of Nemo, an updated cover photo seemed to generate activity on the page. Then, "Titanic" was very popular; the page is ripe with all manner of promotions related to the upcoming 3D re-release of the film.

The band LMFAO was second on the list; during the past week the page shared several popular events, including awards nominations, media appearances, a band anniversary and President Obama singing one of their songs. There were two athletes who rode their popularity to our list, Dwyane Wade and Jeremy Lin. There were some fun, unofficial pages that made the list, including I ♥ THE WEEKENDForever Alone and I dont care how o… These are often humorous and inspire high engagement by users.

BlueStacks, an Android app player for Windows PC, makes its first appearance on the PageData charts this week. The beta version of the app just went live this week. Miracle-Gro continued to be popular, probably due to its FarmVille integration, since there was no apparent reason for growth on the page alone.
