Facebook adds Sponsored Stories to ‘Pages You May Like’ mobile module

Posted: 02 Aug 2012 04:27 PM PDT

Facebook appears to be testing Page-Like Sponsored Stories in a mobile module called “Pages You May Like.”

With this new module, seen right, the social network is showing some users two Sponsored Stories at a time. This increases Facebook’s mobile inventory, but it’s unclear how it might affect clickthrough rates. Two ads are now competing next to each other, but the unit includes a large thumbs-up symbol, which could perform well. It’s unknown whether this format is being tested only for premium advertisers working with Facebook directly or whether any mobile Sponsored Story is eligible to be shown here.

A number of third-party ad providers have seen early success with Facebook's mobile Sponsored Stories. Nanigans found mobile campaigns have an average 45 percent lower cost per click than those on desktop. In some cases, CPCs were as low as $0.20. AdParlor says it has seen an average mobile CTR of 0.821 percent, which is 25 times better than traditional Facebook ads.

However, Facebook is doing a a slow rollout of mobile ads, monitoring interaction and feedback to avoid disrupting the user experience.

We first saw Facebook testing the mobile “Pages You May Like” module at the end of June, but it did not include sponsored listings, as seen below. At the time this seemed to be the mobile equivalent of what Facebook does on desktop with the “Recommended Pages” module in the sidebar. It’s unclear if Facebook will continue to show the module with unpaid suggestions or if it is now for Sponsored Stories only.

Mike Huckabee, Barack Obama, Sarah Palin and more in this week’s top gainers in political pages

Mike Huckabee leads this week's list of top gainers in the People Talking About This metric among political pages.

The top 10 pages gaining People Talking About This saw increases between about 45,000 and over 800,000 engagements. We compile this list with our PageData tool, which tracks page growth across Facebook.

1    Mike Huckabee 913,088  0  +840,322

3    Egypt 244,249  -5,902  +210,546
4    Sarah Palin 550,715  0  +173,362

10    Abhisit Vejjajiva 106,436  +37,555  +45,346

Mike Huckabee has seen his PTAT skyrocket due to his support of the comments made by fast food chain Chick-Fil-A in regards to their stance on same sex marriages. Huckabee conceived “Chick-Fil-A Appreciation Day“, a “cross-protest” to protests against the restaurant chain. In anticipation for the event on Wednesday, Huckabee published multiple posts, many leading to web address iSupportFreeSpeech.com, which leads right back to the Facebook event. On the actual day of, Huckabee shared several photos of different very crowded Chick-Fil-A locations, each contributing to the page’s PTAT.

Another politician that saw an increased PTAT due to their support of Chick-Fil-A is Sarah Palin at No. 4 on this list. With one picture, Palin went viral and saw over 200,00 Likes and 25,000 shares. Huckabee also shared the image on his page which saw 37,000 likes and 2,000 shares itself. It seems that both republican politicians capitalized on a very hot topic and found a very responsive audience.

At #2, President Obama makes no mention of the Chick-Fil-A controversy, opting to focus on the 2012 Presidential Election and opponent Mitt Romney. Globally, other politicians included in this week’s list are Israel Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, chief minister of the Indian state of Gujarat Narendra Modi, and Prime Minister of Thailand Abhisit Vejjajiva.

Facebook allows DoubleClick ad tracking

Posted: 02 Aug 2012 10:35 AM PDT

Facebook recently certified Google's DoubleClick as an approved third-party ad tracker, giving advertisers more flexibility in how they measure impressions, clicks and interactions with their Facebook campaigns.

The social network does not allow third-parties to collect impression tracking data through tracking pixels or tags unless they are certified with Facebook. However, recently Facebook has been expanding its list of partners as brand and agency advertisers look for more ways to understand how their social ads are truly performing.

AdExchanger first reported the DoubleClick approval on Wednesday, citing unnamed sources. AdExchanger also says Adometry was approved in July. The Facebook Help Center confirms the addition of DoubleClick, though it does not mention Adometry. Microsoft's Atlas was approved in late June.

Clients of these services can submit tracking tags along with their creative to Facebook during trafficking. This will allow advertisers to track through to conversion on off-Facebook websites, and view Facebook campaigns alongside their other media efforts.

The social network recently expanded its own conversion tracking capabilities that seem to work with Facebook user IDs rather than cookies. Advertisers using the Ads API can now get reports of post-click and post-impression actions, including what users do on a company's Facebook page or actions they take in Open Graph apps. That means in addition to being able to track whether people who saw an ad checked into a location or claimed an offer, advertisers can also create custom Open Graph actions for anything they want to track on a third-party site or mobile app. For example, a retailer could run ads promoting a loyalty program that ties a user's rewards card with their Facebook profile. With the new conversion tracking, the retailer would be able to see which ads drove in-store purchases.

Other third-parties allowed to use cookie tracking include Bloom Digital, Flashtalking, GroupM, Mediamind, Mediaplex, Pointroll, TruEffect and Weborama.

Facebook is also testing a new real-time bidding exchange that will allow third-party platforms to place retargeting ads on Facebook after users visit external websites marked with cookies. DoubleClick’s demand side platform, DoubleClick Bid Manager, is not included in that test.

Bot problem? Facebook estimates 8.7% of users are duplicate, miscategorized or spam accounts

Posted: 01 Aug 2012 05:37 PM PDT

Facebook says 8.7 percent of its monthly active user total might violate terms of service and be either duplicate, miscategorized or "undesirable" accounts meant for spamming, according to a filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission.

In its quarterly report, Facebook provided updated numbers and new details about illegitimate accounts, which could represent about 83 million users. The company estimates 4.8 percent of its 955 million monthly active users are duplicate accounts. For instance, a user may use one account for connecting with work acquaintances and another for family and close friends.

Facebook says 2.4 percent of accounts are likely miscategorized accounts where users have created personal profiles for a business, organization or pet. These entities should be represented on Facebook with pages, not profiles, according to the social network's terms of service.

Facebook also estimates that 1.5 percent of monthly active users are "undesirable accounts," which are false accounts that are created for spamming or other purposes that violate terms. Earlier this week, a music startup claimed that 80 percent of clicks on its Facebook ad campaign came from bots. Facebook says it is investigating the claims.

According to Facebook's quarterly report, the percentage of accounts that are duplicate or false is significantly lower in developed markets such as the United States or Australia but higher in developing markets such as Indonesia and Turkey. The company says it creates these estimates based on an internal review of a limited sample of accounts. Reviewers identify names that appear to be fake and other behavior that appears inauthentic.

In March, Facebook estimated 5 to 6 percent of its 845 million monthly active users could be false or duplicate accounts. At that time, the company did not offer estimates about what percentage of these accounts were duplicate, miscategorized or otherwise undesirable.

Facebook’s director of platform partnerships announces he’s leaving the company

Posted: 01 Aug 2012 01:50 PM PDT

Facebook Director of Platform Partnerships Ethan Beard announced today that he is leaving the company after more than four years.

Beard publicly announced his departure with a Facebook post seen below. He did not reveal his next plans. Beard joined the Facebook team as director of business development in April 2008. Since January 2009 he has led worldwide developer relations and marketing for the platform, which has expanded significantly with the rise of social marketing and advertising platforms, as well as web and mobile integrations with Open Graph. Beard previously worked at Google as director of social media and director of new business development.

TechCrunch reports that Director of Media Partnerships Justin Osofsky has been promoted to director of platform partnerships and operations following Beard’s departure.

This is yet another top employee leaving the company since it went public in May. Director of Product Management Carl Sjogreen announced the end of his time at Facebook last week. Chief Technology Officer Bret Taylor announced his departure in June and Director of Corporate Communications Barry Schnitt recently left Facebook for Pinterest.

[Update 8/1/12 2:18 p.m. - Manager of Mobile Platform Product Marketing Jonathan Matus also announced today he's leaving Facebook "to explore new directions and entrepreneurial ideas." Matus joined the company in May 2011 after working for Google on Android product marketing.]

[Update 8/1/12 4:47 p.m. - Platform Marketing Director Katie Burke Mitic also announced that she will be moving on from Facebook after two years with the company. She hinted at creating a mobile start-up in a post on her Facebook Timeline.]

Where are Facebook’s mobile-only users coming from? Probably not iPhones

Posted: 01 Aug 2012 01:34 PM PDT

Facebook revealed that 102 million users accessed Facebook solely through mobile devices in June, according to a document filed with the Securities and Exchange Commission.

However, the 23 percent increase since March doesn't necessarily mean that users are ditching desktop in favor of their iPhone or Android device. Facebook is growing rapidly in mobile-first areas like India and Indonesia, which have large bases of feature phone users. This is often overlooked when people consider Facebook's growth and opportunity in mobile because so far the company has not offered a breakdown in the demographics of its mobile users. However, based on trends in feature phone usage and stats Facebook has previously shared, much of the social network's mobile-only usage seems to be coming from emerging markets, though time spent on desktop is likely decreasing in favor of mobile within the U.S. and other developed markets.

Worldwide, Facebook's mobile monthly active users increased 67 percent from 325 million in June 2011 to 543 million in June of this year. The company noted that mobile usage is growing in all regions, and it highlighted the U.S., India and Brazil as key sources of this growth, but it did not say where the mobile-only users are coming from.

However, last month Facebook Head of Mobile Partnerships Emily White shared that 30 percent of new users in India are registering for the site via mobile phones. It's likely these users are among those who never visit Facebook on desktop. The company says it had 59 million MAUs in India in June, an increase of 84 percent compared to the same period in 2011. An analysis using the Facebook ad tool suggests that about 30 percent of India's users are active feature phone users and about 10 percent are Android or iPhone users.

Other emerging markets are also driving the social network's mobile-only growth. White said that 90 percent of users in Africa use mobile phones. According to the document Facebook filed Tuesday, the social network also saw a 24 percent increase in Indonesian users since June 2011. An analysis using the Facebook ad tool suggests that about 36 percent of users in Indonesia are active feature phone users and about 5 percent use iPhones or Android devices. Like in Africa and India, Indonesia is a region where many people are accessing the Internet for the first time through their phones.

In the U.S., Canada, Europe and other desktop-first areas, users are accessing Facebook from both personal computers and mobile devices. Overall, 441 million mobile MAUs accessed Facebook from both platforms in June. CEO Mark Zuckerberg said last week that mobile-connected users are more active than desktop-only users. Specifically, mobile users are 20 percent more likely to use the service on any given day. However, even though these users are still accessing Facebook on desktop, the amount of time they spend on mobile is certainly increasing. The social network experienced a 2 percent decrease in the number of ads delivered in the U.S., despite 10 percent growth in daily users and upping the number of ads per page. CFO David Ebersman attributed this decline to increasing mobile usage and said the company is seeing similar trends in other developed markets.

Facebook reported that 58 million users were mobile-only in December 2011, and 83 million were mobile only in March 2012. The 102 million mobile-only users Facebook reported for June make up little over 10 percent of the social network’s total 955 million monthly active users. In December 2011, 13 percent of total users at the time were mobile-only.

Facebook bug prevents some page owners from being able to hide spam comments

Posted: 01 Aug 2012 10:06 AM PDT

A Facebook bug is causing some page owners to be unable to hide comments that contain spam or inappropriate messages. Page owners can still delete comments, but the “hide” option is temporarily disabled.

Facebook tells us it is aware of the bug and is working on a fix.

Many page owners are frustrated by the issue, which has been around for at least a week based on reports in the Help Center forum. Now when page admins click the X next to a comment, they can only choose “remove,” rather than “hide” or “mark as spam.” The “hide” option is often chosen over “remove” because it prevents unwanted comments from being viewed by other fans, but keeps the comment visible to the person who wrote it. This helps avoid issues where commenters get upset that a page has removed their comments.

Page owners can undo the action if they mistakenly remove a comment, but until the bug is fixed they have to choose whether to leave some unwanted comments on their page or risk upsetting the commenter.

When comments are working properly, hidden comments appear under an ellipsis. They can be expanded and unmarked as spam.

Facebook Users Automatically Checked In To Events They RSVPed Yes To

A reader tipped us off that Facebook is automatically checking in users at events that they RSVPed they would attend. The social network is also generating stories reflecting those check-ins on users' walls and news feeds. Facebook has been gradually overhauling its events feature, launching a redesign last month in which users can choose between viewing events in calendar or list format, which followed the social network's move in June to allow users... read more>>

How Many Times Should You Post To Your Facebook Page?

The major question most marketers have, after "What should I post to our company's Facebook page," is usually, "When should I post it?" While many Facebook marketing experts say companies should post once per day, PostRocket'sMike Maghsoudi points out that there's no hard-and-fast rule. Companies should post when it makes sense for them to post. Maghsoudi notes that an overwhelming majority of fans don't exactly rush back to a page to check... read more>>

Google acquires Wildfire, maker of social marketing software

Posted: 31 Jul 2012 11:51 AM PDT

Google today announced that it agreed to acquire Wildfire Interactive, a social media marketing software company that is a popular solution for managing pages and apps across platforms.

Terms of the deal have not been disclosed, but AllThingsD reports that it could be around $250 million, plus earnouts and employment agreements. Wildfire was widely expected to be acquired this summer, after other major players in the space — Buddy Media, Vitrue, Involver — were also bought.

Wildfire is a member of Facebook’s Preferred Marketer Developer program, certified in pages, apps and insights. Co-founders Victoria Ransom and Alain Chuard started the company four years ago focused on building apps for sweepstakes, user-generated contests, quizzes, coupons and incentive-based surveys. In 2011, Wildfire broadened its service offering to include page management and monitoring tools. Besides Facebook management, the platform now allows marketers to manage Google+, YouTube, Twitter, Pinterest and LinkedIn. The company serves clients including Virgin, Cirque du Soleil, Gilt Group and Spotify. It also helps build apps for Facebook’s own use, including the voting app it used for its proposed policy changes earlier this year.

Google was reportedly interested in Buddy Media, but that company sold to Salesforce. Now with Wildfire, Google gets a popular platform and large sales team. The Redwood City, Calif.-based company has about 350 people. Unlike Buddy Media, Wildfire doesn’t have access to the Facebook Ads API, but it’s unclear to what degree Google was interested in that aspect of the platform. Wildfire works with Adaptly to provide social advertising services for its clients.

In an announcement about the acquisition, Google wrote:

In a complex and changing landscape, businesses want to manage and measure these efforts in an integrated way. We've been working towards this end for some time. For example, Google Analytics helps businesses measure the contribution of hundreds of social sites; our Admeld service has helped to serve ads in Facebook developers' social apps; and our DoubleClick platform enables clients to run and measure ads across social websites. On Google+, brands use services like Vitrue, Buddy Media and others to manage their pages, with many more to come.

With Wildfire, we're looking forward to creating new opportunities for our clients to engage with people across all social services. We believe that better content and more seamless solutions will help unlock the full potential of the web for people and businesses.

Facebook to introduce additional targeting for page posts, including age, gender, relationship status and education

Posted: 31 Jul 2012 10:57 AM PDT

Facebook is planning to allow pages to target their posts to new subsets of their audience, including fans of a particular age range or gender, according to a marketer who was briefed by a Facebook representative about the change.

This change, which has begun rolling out to some pages today and should be available to all pages within a few weeks, will give marketers more control over how they communicate with their audiences, and may lead to fewer unsubcribers and more People Talking About if fans start seeing more relevant content.

Age and gender join the existing targeting options of location and language, but it’s unclear whether interest-based audience segmenting will also be allowed. The social network recently announced that it is deprecating an option to publish updates to users who clicked Like buttons on Open Graph objects around the web, so this upcoming targeting option for pages could be a replacement. We’ve reached out to Facebook for more information about which additional criteria page owners will be able to select for targeting their posts.

[Update 7/31/12 11:17 a.m. PT - Facebook did not offer any details about possible targeting options coming to pages. They replied with the following statement, "We are always testing new features across the site. We have nothing further to share at this time."]

[Update 7/31/12 11:52 a.m. PT - It seems interest-targeting will not be an option for now. Another marketer tells us these are the targeting criteria that will be available for page posts:

- age
- gender
- interested in
- relationship status
- language
- education
- workplace
- location (country, state, city)]

Page post targeting will only apply to News Feed distribution. All posts will remain visible from the page’s Timeline. This will allow the friends of fans who don't meet the targeting criteria to see stories about their friends Liking or commenting on the post.

The change will benefit page owners who want additional controls to tailor messages to different subsets of their audience. If pages take advantage of the feature, users will see more relevant content. This will likely reduce the number of fans who unsubscribe to posts or unlike pages. It could also help pages increase the Talking About This metric by allowing admins to create multiple posts per day without overwhelming fans. Targeting posts by additional criteria will reduce the number of impressions per post, but feedback should increase if content is more relevant to the fans who see it.

Facebook has offered the ability to target page posts by location and language since 2009. Page owners can currently select location and language targeting options from the page post publisher by clicking the drop-down menu next
to "Post.”

Update 7/31/12 11:52 a.m. PT - Here is an image of the new targeting feature from a guide Facebook has shared with some page owners:

Facebook tests bookmarking feature to save News Feed items for later viewing

Posted: 31 Jul 2012 10:20 AM PDT

Facebook is testing a new option for users to save posts in mobile and desktop News Feed for later viewing, iMore and The Verge have discovered.

The feature has not rolled out to all users, but those in the test can bookmark items by clicking “save” on desktop and tapping and holding a story on iOS. If Facebook introduces this to all users, pages could see additional engagement on their posts, especially posts that include links or videos. Often times when users scroll through their feed, they don’t have the time or aren’t in the right environment to read a longer article or watch a video. Previously there was no easy, native way to bookmark these items for later, so pages were likely missing opportunities for fans to view and share their content.

We haven’t been able to test the feature for ourselves, but it seems that it will allow users to save stories on either mobile or desktop and then view them from another device by accessing the Saved feed from the Favorites panel on the left of News Feed.

Facebook recently hired the team behind Spool, a social bookmarking service that makes web content available for offline viewing on mobile devices, but this new feature is likely unrelated to that deal because saved posts are not optimized for offline viewing.
