Facebook's Mobile Advertising Interface Was Built By Interns
Interns at Facebook are responsible for much more than getting coffee and making copies. They make valuable contributions. Peter Cottle, a graduate student at the University of California, Berkleley, and future Facebook engineer, reflected on his internship with the social network, writing that himself and another intern were responsible for most of the work on the site's first mobile advertising interface. Even Cottle (pictured), who will join Facebook full-time next spring, admitted... read more>>
Facebook Testing Event Reminders
If you're the type who likes to use Facebook events, you may have noticed that the site is pushing notifications as your party or appointment draws closer. Facebook confirmed to The Next Web that it has been testing reminders for people who have RSVPed to events. Much like how applications can push notifications when a friend reaches a new level in a game or when you haven't played in a while, Facebook... read more>>
Mark Zuckerberg No. 2 On 'Fortune' 40 Under 40
Facebook finished second to Google, at least on the annual 40 Under 40 list from Fortune, as Facebook Co-Founder and CEO Mark Zuckerberg came in at No. 2, trailing only Google Co-Founder and CEO Larry Page. Fortune wrote in its profile of Zuckerberg: Facebook's stock may have taken a beating since its $104 billion stock market initial public offering in May, but eight years after Zuckerberg founded the social network in his Harvard... read more>>
Facebook Fixes Issue That Left Users' Phone Numbers Vulnerable
After someone found a security breach that exposed users' phone numbers, Facebook confirmed that it has patched the hole. According toComputer World, independent security researcher Suriya Prakash found that Facebook's search-by-phone-number function was heavily flawed, allowing people to easily harvest phone numbers. Facebook traditionally asks users to provide their phone numbers for additional security, also allowing users to search for friends by their digits. However, Prakash found a hole in this program,... read more>>
Is Facebook Paying Its Fair Share Of U.K. Taxes?
Facebook is catching some heat in the U.K. for allegedly not ponying up its fair share of taxes, and for doing so, in part, by locating its international headquarters in Dublin. The Guardian cited figures provided by Facebook to U.K. executive agency Companies House in reporting that the social network's British arm paid its 90 U.K.-based employees an average of £275,000 ($440,063) in 2011, while paying only £195,890 ($313,469) to the Treasury. The... read more>>
New Political Ad App From Campaign Solutions Leverages Facebook's Open Graph Tweaks
"Where do you see yourself in four years?" That's the question posed in the first Facebook application for the Ending Spending Action Fund, which pulls Facebook users' photos to become part of the video, called "The Ad About You." The final product can be shared across Facebook and other social media channels to demonstrate support for Mitt Romney with friends and followers. The app was developed by Republican firm Campaign Solutions, and... read more>>
Facebook Conducting Customer-Satisfaction Survey
A Facebook customer-satisfaction survey appears to be making the rounds, but this one sticks to the user experience, and doesn't detour into politics, like a similar effort that was released in error last month. Some Facebook users (including yours truly) are being greeted by a message at the top of their news feeds, including their first names and reading, "We'd like to hear from you. Please take three to four minutes to... read more>>

The video shows hundreds of Facebook employees, along with friends and family, marching to support Gay@Facebook during the Pride Parade in June. A Facebook spokesperson confirmed to AllFacebook that birthdays have been moved to the top of the mobile news feed, and this will be the way that people can... read more>>

A Holiday Checklist For Brands On Facebook
Facebook marketing outfit TabSite is already done with its list for the upcoming holiday season. However, the list is not a shopping list, but rather a checklist for how brands and retailers should approach the most important time of their year. TabSite cited a prediction from the National Retail Federation that holiday retail sales will rise 4.1 percent compared with the 2011 period, to $586.1 billion, and last year's record-setting $52.4 billion... read more>>
