Facebook Officially Launches Groups For Schools
Facebook has officially debuted student-onlygroups for colleges and universities. The capability underwent testing last year with a few schools but is now rolling it out more broadly, a spokesperson said via email. The feature adds a much-needed layer of security to groups. Recently quashed outbreaks of malware have included bogus alumni networks, along with friend requests from marketers or bots masquerading as former classmates. Here's how Facebook described in a blog post: Today we're... read more>>
Facebook Consolidates Status Menu On Timeline
Facebook converted the status update area of timeline for pages to a one-stop shop where brands can post milestones, events, and questions from the same menu. When page managers access the "What's on your mind?" box for status updates, several changes appear. While the word "status" remains the same, the next label says "photo/video." Previously, a single icon bore the label "photos" without clarifying that it also led to "photos. The link to... read more>>

Remove Facebook Timeline With Chrome Plugin
Exoot Systems released yet another browser plugin that promises to remove timeline for profiles, but unlike others in the past, this one provides details on how it works and what it does and doesn't do. Facebook Timeline Remover is a browser plugin for Google Chrome that intercepts the HTML code sent by Facebook and substitutes the code for the pre-timeline layout. Only users who have installed Facebook Timeline Remover will be able to... read more>>
App Scraps Facebook Timeline Two-Column Format
Brand managers may have had the conversion to timeline for pages forced upon them, but Tabfusion came up with a way for them to scrap its two-column format for wall posts. The Feed tab application allows pages to display wall posts in the traditional, one-column format, keeping them under a tab, while saving the timeline layout for other types of content. Tabfusion described it further: For pages that allow fans to post to their... read more>>
Who Will Facebook Buy Next? Place Your Bets!
"We don't plan on doing many more of these, if any at all," Facebook Co-Founder and Chief Executive Officer Mark Zuckerberg said in announcing the social network's $1 billion acquisition of photo-sharing service Instagram. Want to bet? Ireland-based bookmaker Paddy Power is taking bets on what company Facebook will acquire next, and location-based mobile application Foursquare is the early favorite. The current odds, from Paddy Power, are: Foursquare 4 to 1 Evernote 9 to 2 Dropbox... read more>>
Maryland May Become The First To Ban Employers From Requesting Facebook Passwords
Maryland could become the first state in the U.S. to prohibit employers from requesting current and prospective employees' Facebook passwords. Both houses of the state legislature passed a bill to this effect and sent it on to Maryland Governor Martin O'Malley, according to The Baltimore Sun. His office staff told the newspaper that he has "hundreds" of bills to go through in addition to the one concerning Facebook passwords. We can only assume... read more>>
Animated GIF Files Invade Facebook Timeline
Facebook's timeline has a lot of positive things to offer to both users and brands, but the proprietor of a Polish graphic design company may have uncovered a huge negative: Myspace-style animated GIFs. Piotr à Âój, whose company Lokje designs pages for Facebook brands, emailed us the video below. Uh oh. The only piece of good news to come out of this: The animated GIF files don't come with audio -- yet. Still, this particular... read more>>
Why Facebook Is Paying $1 Billion For Instagram
Instagram's traffic has steadily risen over the last six months, reaching 3.8 million last week, up from 68,800 visits for the week ending October 22, 2012. That kind of momentum explains why Facebook paid $1 billion for the photo sharing network with over 30 million users. While the majority of activity takes place within the Instagram application, the website provides links to the Apple App Store and Google Play as well as... read more>>
Microsoft Likes Its Latest Facebook Project
As one of the earliest investors in Facebook, Microsoft stands to gain a great deal from the social network's initial public offer next month. That's a fantastic incentive for the Redmond-based software giant to put anything on top of the social network, including A Year In The Like. This new project sounds a bit like a rehash of how Facebook promoted the one-year anniversary of the thumb-up icon this past summer --... read more>>
