StumbleUpon Upgrades App For Facebook Timeline

StumbleUpon became the latest application to stumble upon Facebook's timeline and upgrade to take advantage of its capabilities. The timeline-upgraded StumbleUpon app follows the patterns of other apps that have integrated the new layout, grouping together StumbleUpon activity, including likes and interests, channels, or Stumblers being followed. StumbleUpon said users' permission is required to activate its new app, which can be done through its settings page. Users will be prompted to log into... read more>>

42% Mobile Users Share Multimedia Via Facebook

A survey of Myxer's 1,022 mobile users found that 42 percent of respondents use Facebook to share content on handheld devices, using it more frequently than text messaging. Facebook also dominates sharing from desktop computers, as 58 percent use the social network to share images and video, dwarfing even email, which 17 percent of respondents use for passing on multimedia content. Somewhat surprisingly, Google Plus ranks as the second-most used social network for... read more>>

A Look At Facebook's Pre-IPO Work Climate

With Facebook's initial public offering growing closer by the day, information about the company is being sought from every possible angle, and online jobs and career community Glassdoor went straight to the most knowledgeable sources of all: Facebook employees. Glassdoor gathered thoughts from workers at the social network on topics including overall satisfaction, salary packages, confidence in Co-Founder and Chief Executive Officer Mark Zuckerberg, pros and cons of working at Facebook, and... read more>>

Facebook Adds To Download Your Information

Facebook increased the amount of information users can archive when they download their account histories using the social network's Download Your Information feature. Download Your Information was first introduced in October 2010, and it allowed Facebook users to download an archive of their history on the social network and content they had shared, including photos, posts, messages, friends, and chat conversations. Facebook announced an expansion of that list on its Facebook and Privacy... read more>>

Confused.com Puts House Of Horrors On Facebook

U.K.-based price-comparison website Confused.com created a Take This Lollipop-inspired video application to promote the benefits of home insurance and drive potential customers to shop. House of Horrors only works with U.K. addresses. The app instructs users to enter their post codes, and then adds images from their Facebook profiles to a video of a burglar breaking into a house, to create the illusion that the user's home is being burglarized. At the end... read more>>

Facebook Ad Clickthroughs Peak On Saturdays

People click on Facebook ads more frequently on Saturdays than any other day of the week. And Friday's the second-most popular day for clickthroughs, according to TBG Global's analysis of 66 billion ad impressions during the first quarter of this year. However, there's only a 12 percent difference between the busiest day and the slowest day, Monday. This difference has to do with supply and demand along with how people's usage of the site... read more>>

Facebook Timeline Wall Comments Won't All Hide

A setting available to timeline pages promises the ability to hide wall comments until an administrator approves them, but the setting has yet to work as described. We wonder whether the malfunctioning of this option has to do with what appears to be a late arrival: five different tiers of page administrator privileges, which Facebook executives had first announced at the marketing conference in New York February 29, noting the tiering would... read more>>

After SOPA, PIPA, How Can Facebook Like CISPA?

The Cyber Intelligence Sharing and Protection Act has a few things in common with the defeated Secure Online Information Privacy Act the Protect Internet Property Act besides rhyming acronyms, except that Facebook likes CISPA, despite very publicly hating SOPA and PIPA. Unfortunately, CISPA won't enable Netflix to stream videos to U.S. customers on Facebook, which a precursor to SOPA and PIPA might have done if only the Senate hadn't attempted to widen... read more>>

4% Of Children On Facebook Are Under 6 Years

Kids are learning to use computers at ever younger ages, and some are figuring out how to lie about their age to access Facebook. The site has a minimum age requirement of 13, yet four percent of children using the site are under age six. That's the most startling statistic in the infographic compiled by Minor Monitor, one of the newer entrants into the already crowded market for surveiling kids' activity online.... read more>>

A timeline page commissioned by the Israel Anti-Drug Authority was nominated for a Webby Award in the "best use of social media" category, even the profile was removed by Facebook for not representing a real person. McCann Erickson Tel Aviv created the "IADA: Drugs Set Your Timeline" Facebook campaign. The centerpiece of the campaign is a profile for fictional Facebook user Adam Barak, using timeline's two-column format, withthe left-hand column displaying images of... read more>>

Facebook Officially Launches Groups For Schools

Facebook has officially debuted student-onlygroups for colleges and universities. The capability underwent testing last year with a few schools but is now rolling it out more broadly, a spokesperson said via email. The feature adds a much-needed layer of security to groups. Recently quashed outbreaks of malware have included bogus alumni networks, along with friend requests from marketers or bots masquerading as former classmates. Here's how Facebook described in a blog post: Today we're... read more>>

Facebook Consolidates Status Menu On Timeline

Facebook converted the status update area of timeline for pages to a one-stop shop where brands can post milestones, events, and questions from the same menu. When page managers access the "What's on your mind?" box for status updates, several changes appear. While the word "status" remains the same, the next label says "photo/video." Previously, a single icon bore the label "photos" without clarifying that it also led to "photos. The link to... read more>>
