Facebook adds Sponsored Stories to ‘Pages You May Like’ mobile module

Posted: 02 Aug 2012 04:27 PM PDT

Facebook appears to be testing Page-Like Sponsored Stories in a mobile module called “Pages You May Like.”

With this new module, seen right, the social network is showing some users two Sponsored Stories at a time. This increases Facebook’s mobile inventory, but it’s unclear how it might affect clickthrough rates. Two ads are now competing next to each other, but the unit includes a large thumbs-up symbol, which could perform well. It’s unknown whether this format is being tested only for premium advertisers working with Facebook directly or whether any mobile Sponsored Story is eligible to be shown here.

A number of third-party ad providers have seen early success with Facebook's mobile Sponsored Stories. Nanigans found mobile campaigns have an average 45 percent lower cost per click than those on desktop. In some cases, CPCs were as low as $0.20. AdParlor says it has seen an average mobile CTR of 0.821 percent, which is 25 times better than traditional Facebook ads.

However, Facebook is doing a a slow rollout of mobile ads, monitoring interaction and feedback to avoid disrupting the user experience.

We first saw Facebook testing the mobile “Pages You May Like” module at the end of June, but it did not include sponsored listings, as seen below. At the time this seemed to be the mobile equivalent of what Facebook does on desktop with the “Recommended Pages” module in the sidebar. It’s unclear if Facebook will continue to show the module with unpaid suggestions or if it is now for Sponsored Stories only.

Mike Huckabee has seen his PTAT skyrocket due to his support of the comments made by fast food chain Chick-Fil-A in regards to their stance on same sex marriages. Huckabee conceived “Chick-Fil-A Appreciation Day“, a “cross-protest” to protests against the restaurant chain. In anticipation for the event on Wednesday, Huckabee published multiple posts, many leading to web address iSupportFreeSpeech.com, which leads right back to the Facebook event. On the actual day of, Huckabee shared several photos of different very crowded Chick-Fil-A locations, each contributing to the page’s PTAT.

Another politician that saw an increased PTAT due to their support of Chick-Fil-A is Sarah Palin at No. 4 on this list. With one picture, Palin went viral and saw over 200,00 Likes and 25,000 shares. Huckabee also shared the image on his page which saw 37,000 likes and 2,000 shares itself. It seems that both republican politicians capitalized on a very hot topic and found a very responsive audience.

At #2, President Obama makes no mention of the Chick-Fil-A controversy, opting to focus on the 2012 Presidential Election and opponent Mitt Romney. Globally, other politicians included in this week’s list are Israel Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, chief minister of the Indian state of Gujarat Narendra Modi, and Prime Minister of Thailand Abhisit Vejjajiva.

Facebook allows DoubleClick ad tracking

Posted: 02 Aug 2012 10:35 AM PDT

Facebook recently certified Google's DoubleClick as an approved third-party ad tracker, giving advertisers more flexibility in how they measure impressions, clicks and interactions with their Facebook campaigns.

The social network does not allow third-parties to collect impression tracking data through tracking pixels or tags unless they are certified with Facebook. However, recently Facebook has been expanding its list of partners as brand and agency advertisers look for more ways to understand how their social ads are truly performing.

AdExchanger first reported the DoubleClick approval on Wednesday, citing unnamed sources. AdExchanger also says Adometry was approved in July. The Facebook Help Center confirms the addition of DoubleClick, though it does not mention Adometry. Microsoft's Atlas was approved in late June.

Clients of these services can submit tracking tags along with their creative to Facebook during trafficking. This will allow advertisers to track through to conversion on off-Facebook websites, and view Facebook campaigns alongside their other media efforts.

The social network recently expanded its own conversion tracking capabilities that seem to work with Facebook user IDs rather than cookies. Advertisers using the Ads API can now get reports of post-click and post-impression actions, including what users do on a company's Facebook page or actions they take in Open Graph apps. That means in addition to being able to track whether people who saw an ad checked into a location or claimed an offer, advertisers can also create custom Open Graph actions for anything they want to track on a third-party site or mobile app. For example, a retailer could run ads promoting a loyalty program that ties a user's rewards card with their Facebook profile. With the new conversion tracking, the retailer would be able to see which ads drove in-store purchases.

Other third-parties allowed to use cookie tracking include Bloom Digital, Flashtalking, GroupM, Mediamind, Mediaplex, Pointroll, TruEffect and Weborama.

Facebook is also testing a new real-time bidding exchange that will allow third-party platforms to place retargeting ads on Facebook after users visit external websites marked with cookies. DoubleClick’s demand side platform, DoubleClick Bid Manager, is not included in that test.
