Facebook ends Reach Generator program in favor of Promoted Posts product

Posted: 13 Sep 2012 07:00 PM PDT

Facebook has ended the Reach Generator program for premium advertisers less than seven months since it was announced at fMC, a company spokesperson confirms.

Reach Generator allowed advertisers to pay Facebook on an ongoing basis, as opposed to a CPC or CPM basis, to sponsor their page posts and guarantee a 75 percent reach of the page's fanbase over a month-long period. Posts might appear within the feed or in the sidebar. The company is focusing instead on its Promoted Posts product, which is not limited to premium advertisers.

“We are simplifying our offerings for advertisers, who can now achieve reach goals through Promoted Posts, a recently launched product which gives businesses the increased flexibility to hand-select and boost posts in the News Feed,” a Facebook spokesperson said.

As a premium offering, Reach Generator required advertisers to work with Facebook directly. Costs were determined by the size of the page and were likely higher than what it would cost to reach the same number of people through non-premium placements. However, when the Reach Generator program was announced in February, it was harder for pages to reach additional fans through the feed.

Since then, the social network has opened up more opportunities for pages to reach users more effectively. In June, advertisers gained the ability to control whether their ads appear in the desktop or mobile feed. Ads API partners are able to use this and fine-tune campaigns so that creative and audience segmentation can be optimized. Many advertisers prefer paying on a cost per click basis than a set monthly fee like Reach Generator offered.

Facebook also recently introduced Promoted Posts for pages with more than 400 Likes. This makes it easier for pages to increase the reach of their posts without going through the ad dashboard. Initially we were told that Promoted Posts were only for pages with fewer than 100,000 Likes, but that seems to have changed. There’s no mention of the maximum in the Help Center and we’ve heard from pages with more than 100,000 Likes that have gained access to the feature.

These options allow companies to achieve the same goals that Reach Generator was intended for without requiring Facebook to dedicate additional resources toward managed services. Offering a self-serve tool and third-party partner services make the company more efficient.

Facebook will continue to support currently running campaigns, but will no longer accept new insertion orders or renewals for Reach Generator.

Lil Wayne, Lady Gaga, One Direction and more in this week’s top PTAT gainers among musician/band pages

Posted: 13 Sep 2012 02:14 PM PDT

Lil Wayne leads this week’s list of top gainers in the People Talking About This metric on Facebook, among musician/band pages. The New Orleans rapper saw more than 550,000 additional engagements this week, boasting over a million in total People Talking About This.

The top 10 pages gaining PTAT saw increases between 550,000 and 216,000 engagements. We compile this list with our PageData tool, which tracks page growth across Facebook.

# Name People Talking About Weekly Growth
1    Lil Wayne 1,026,457 +558,068
2    Lady Gaga 870,683 +438,242
3    One Direction 1,563,100 +436,863
4    Wiz Khalifa 550,559 +352,485
5    Alicia Keys 782,874 +351,960
6    Queen 607,734 +328,958
7    Pink Floyd 469,200 +298,641
8    Banda Garota Safada oficial 1,963,011 +284,858
9    P!nk 416,217 +257,446
10    ♥ Jill Scott ♥ 233,883 +216,601

With more than 40 million Likes, Lil Wayne is the 10th most liked musician page on Facebook. Fellow rapper Eminem is No. 1 with over 60 million likes, but has actually seen his PTAT fall, seeing 79,499 fewer engagements in the last seven days. Looking at Eminem’s page, there has not been an update since Aug. 31. However, in the last week, Wayne has published seven posts each receiving significant engagement. One of these received over 300,000 Likes and another received over 12,000 comments.

It is interesting to see the strategy Wayne’s publicists have taken in managing his Facebook page. It seems the page managers simply attach a photo to his tweets and make them Facebook posts. Wayne’s team likely chooses to filter out some of his more nonsensical tweets using Facebook as more of a promotional tool rather than a personal space for the artist to connect with fans.

Although boasting over 60 million likes, Eminem’s page is not utilizing his fan base on Facebook. By taking a look at the graph below, you can see the steady drop off in PTAT over the past few weeks, even though the number of new Likes per day has remained consistent.

Facebook overtakes Japanese social network Mixi in Japan

Posted: 13 Sep 2012 12:38 PM PDT

Facebook’s chief operating officer Sheryl Sandberg said in an interview with Japan’s business daily The Nikkei that Facebook has reached 15 million active users in Japan, surpassing Japanese social network Mixi.

“Japan is a really important market for us,” Sandberg said. “We have over 15 million users…  Only six months ago, we were at 10 million users.” This marks a huge growth over the past year, increasing 200 percent from the reported 5 million users in September 2011. Sandberg also said that the company intends to increase its focus on Japan, and Facebook has also been listing Japan-specific roles for their Tokyo offices.

Mixi announced 14.53 million MAUs in June 2012, a drop from a reported 15.2 million users in February. Facebook has had difficulty penetrating the Japanese market and this marks the first time the company has surpassed Mixi’s MAU.

In January 2011 The New York Times reported that the number of Japanese Facebook users was under 2 million, or less than 2 percent of the country’s online population. According to the article, at the time Japanese users showed little interest in Facebook, citing that it was not optimized for the Japanese language and a reluctance to use real names and other information.

Clearly, Facebook strategy in the Japan resulted in great gains over the last year, and Mixi’s numbers may continue to fall as Facebook builds a larger audience in the country.

Ad partners see early promise as Facebook brings FBX retargeting system out of beta

Posted: 13 Sep 2012 09:11 AM PDT

Facebook today announced that its Facebook Exchange platform is coming out of beta today with 15 partners authorized to buy ad inventory through real-time bidding.

A number of beta partners are reporting lower costs per acquisition than on other exchanges and expressed continued interest in FBX, which allows third-party platforms to place retargeting ads on Facebook after users visit external websites marked with cookies. Here are some key stats from companies that shared results:

  • 10-20x return on investment, according to TellApart
  • 300 percent better cost-per-leads, according to Bizo
  • Reduced CPAs by as much as 25 percent, according to AppNexus
  • One-fifth the CPA and four times the ROI compared to traditional campaigns, according to Triggit, which also shared the infographic below

Recently added to the list of demand-side platforms approved for FBX is Kenshoo. Kenshoo joins Nanigans and Optimal as existing Ads API partners also authorized for FBX. However, in its current state, advertisers cannot combine Facebook’s demographic- and interest-based targeting with their own cookie data. This limits the potential for creative optimization, though many advertisers expect Facebook to allow this at some point in the future.

For now, the exchange works as so: when a user visits a site that has hired one of Facebook's partner platforms (DSPs), a cookie will be placed on that user's browser when the person reaches a stage that implies purchase intent. If a user does not complete a transaction, the DSP will be able to bid on retargeting ads that appear on Facebook when the user visits the social network.

Facebook is hiring two positions directly related to FBX: a partner manager and a technical account manager, suggesting that the company is expecting to bring more DSPs into the program.
