Facebook Plays Key Part In How People Discover, Share News
It's apparent that Facebook has changed the way people share information, and not just baby photos and event announcements. According to a study in the United Kingdom by the Reuters Institute, the social network is responsible for 55 percent of the country's news sharing, beating out e-mail and Twitter. Some other interesting tidbits from the study: 20 percent of UK residents now discover news via social media. 55 percent of news links are shared... read more>>
Facebook Acquisition Face.com Will No Longer Support APIs, Shuts Klik App
Following its acquisition by Facebook last month, Israeli-based facial recognition site Face.com is shuttering its own products, including its application-programming interfaces and Klik iPhone application, to focus on the social network. A note on the Face.com homepage reads: Face.com has been acquired by Facebook, and, as part of this process, we need to close up existing products and services so we can focus on new products at Facebook. We're working with Face.com developers to... read more>>
Report: Mutual Funds Not Wary Of Facebook
Facebook's initial public offering may not have lived up to expectations on the Nasdaq exchange, with the stock slumping from its $38-per-share debut May 18 to approximately $32.25 at the time of this post, but that hasn't stopped at least 160 U.S.-based mutual funds and exchange-traded funds from adding the social network to their mix. The Wall Street Journal reported that research from Morningstar showed that funds run by Fidelity Investments, Morgan... read more>>
Report: Facebook Marketers More Concerned With Promoting The Brand Than Racking Up Likes
While several businesses that market on Facebook tend to become overly concerned with the number of likes their page has, Advertising Age found that more marketers are buying ads on Facebook to build brand awareness, not boost fan numbers. The survey of 488 marketers performed by AdAge shows that 45.9 percent of responders polled said building brand awareness is their No. 1 priority with regard to Facebook ads. Driving traffic to brands'... read more>>
Facebook App, Firefox Plugin Analyze Facebook Friends To Root Out Potential Fakes
A new tool to help parents protect their kids on Facebook, and to help Facebook users in general avoid fake user profiles, was developed by Israel's Ben-Gurion University of the Negev. The tool comes in the form of a Facebook application called Friends Protector or a Firefox add-on called Social Privacy Protector. They work by analyzing users' friends lists and scoring their "connectedness" to every friend, based on mutual links. Those friends with... read more>>
Facebook Might Launch Job Search Feature
Although LinkedIn is still king when it comes to finding jobs through social networking, Facebook might make some waves soon with a job search feature. A Dow Jones Newswires reporter recently heard that Facebook is planning to launch its own job board, aggregating listings from third-party providers. Sources say this doesn't mean that Facebook is trying to take over LinkedIn, but it does pose a bit of a threat. The two sites... read more>>

Facebook issued an apology after mistakenly deleting a post from free speech group Article 19 about human rights abuses in Syria. The Guardian reported that the social network said the post was mistakenly removed after being reported as containing offensive content, adding that its moderation team receives "a high volume of take-down requests," and issuing a statement saying: The link was reported to Facebook. We assess such reports manually and, because of the... read more>>

A total of 92 percent of U.S. companies use social networks and social media to recruit talent, up from 78 percent five years ago, according to new research from recruitment platform Jobvite, which also found that although LinkedIn remains dominant in the sector, Facebook and Twitter continue to make inroads. Facebook To Start Tracking Mobile Apps For Targeted Ads
