Posted: 12 Jul 2012 06:35 PM PDT

Facebook added a number of interesting new job listings to its careers page this week, including a Chinese language specialist and a growth manager for Russia.

Facebook is currently blocked in China, but the company definitely has interest in the region. The new job listing says applicants for the Chinese language specialist should have “strong familiarity with the target culture and trends in social networking.”

The Growth Manager, Russia position calls for an employee who can “identify and monitor strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats relevant for Facebook's adoption in Russia,” as well as “influence and improve the Facebook experience of users in Russia by identifying product/market fit gaps.”

Facebook also added positions for a Head of Business Operations, Mid Market and Small & Medium Business and a Technology Partner, Sales & Marketing Partnerships. The former position will be part of the finance team, responsible for providing analytical support to the company’s Global Mid Market and Global SMB Sales teams. The latter position will concentrate in the short term on defining and implementing a revenue forecasting and quota setting process for the company.

SimCity Social, SongPop, Chill, TripAdvisor and more on this week’s top 20 growing Facebook apps by MAU

EA’s SimCity Social led our list of top Facebook apps growing by monthly active users this week. The citybuilding game was released in open beta at the end of June, but it officially launched last week. With the holiday weekend over, MAU has begun to climb more quickly.

The titles on our list this week grew between 500,000 and 1.9 million MAU, based on AppData, our data tracking service covering growth for apps on Facebook.

Cross-platform name-that-tune game SongPop continues to grow quickly. Last week FreshPlanet released a new premium mobile version of the game that is ad-free and comes with the ability to play more games and listen to longer music clips.

Social video site Chill picked up 1 million MAU this week, as the site uses Open Graph to publish users’ viewing activity and grow virally.

TripAdvisor took the No. 4 spot this week, with the company previously running Sponsored Stories that have a viral effect. At No. 5 is TA Hare/Carrot, which is actually a staging app that experienced a development issue, causing some of TripAdvisor's live site traffic to be put through the staging app. TripAdvisor tells us it corrected the problem so it is not likely to remain on our AppData lists.

InstagramGlassdoorPinterest and some tab applications from Woobox and Thunderpenny round out our list this week.

Facebook creates new feature to announce weddings and engagements on homepage

Posted: 12 Jul 2012 04:47 PM PDT

Facebook today announced the launch of a new weddings and celebrations feature to make it easier for users to see important events in their friends’ lives and share their congratulations.

When someone changes their Facebook status to engaged or married, it will display to all of their friends in the sidebar next to News Feed. Users can check for birthdays, events, engagements and marriages at the same time. They can then click on the engagement or marriage announcement to write a congratulatory post on the couple’s Timeline. If a user is not already friends with both partners, they can add the other person without being directed to another page. The main benefit to the new feature is that a friend’s big announcement doesn’t get buried in News Feed.

On Wednesday, Facebook updated its event dashboard to include a calendar view for users to see all of their events and friends’ upcoming birthdays. Facebook told TechCrunch that they were holding off adding weddings and celebrations to the calendar. The engagement and wedding announcements are currently limited to the homepage.

The social network often tests new ways to promote activity and help users connect more easily. In 2010, the company introduced a News Feed story for when multiple friends write on a friend’s Wall for their birthday. This helped users remember to send birthday messages to their friends. Last year, Facebook made this even easier with a way for users to write Happy Birthday on a friend’s wall without leaving the homepage.

Also last year, Facebook tested a feature called Big Events, which would update users on a big event happening in their friends’ lives. The module would appear on different pages across the site, not just News Feed, and it prompted users to use Facebook messages rather than Wall posts.

In the future, we might see Facebook expand the weddings and celebrations feature to include when users have a new baby or indicate another important life event on their Timeline.

Kiddie Mojo, Wet Seal, Old Navy and others in this week’s most talked about pages among clothing retailers

Posted: 12 Jul 2012 02:11 PM PDT

Independent clothing company, Kiddie Mojo, leads American clothing retailers as a weekly gainer for the People Talking About This metric.

Panicloset, a Thai fashion boutique, has seen the highest growth overall this week. Second on the list, with only 4,089 likes, Kiddie Mojo has seen over 100,000 engagements this week, surpassing popular retailers Wet Seal and Old Navy.

The top 10 pages gaining People Talking About This saw increases between about 60,000 and over 200,000 engagements. We compile this list with our PageData tool, which tracks page growth across Facebook.

# Name People Talking About Daily Growth Weekly Growth
1    Panicloset 798,933 +99,322 +224,077
2    Kiddie Mojo 188,539 +4,847 +119,987
3    Wet Seal 152,199 +105,445 +107,926
4    Kat Von D Los Angeles 95,612 +874 +93,492
5    ZARA 139,635 +18,955 +88,613
6    Old Navy 142,933 +42,953 +73,241
7    Momolove 204,469 0 +68,579
8    Fox Racing 95,442 -7,175 +57,043
9    BG Fashion 53,741 -464 +46,291
10    Nordstrom 71,288 +18,108 +45,318

Kiddie Mojo, a company started by two parents, typically sees anywhere between 20 to 300 shares. However, they sometimes see their weekly growth skyrocket with with a single post receiving more than one thousand shares, which can be seen below. In addition, the majority of the page’s PTAT growth is not necessarily from engagement directly from the Kiddie Mojo page, but from viral shares and the likes and comments that come from the friends of a fan who shared the post. This week saw no posts of Kiddie Mojo’s actual products so it is unclear whether this growth has increased business.

Women’s retailer, Wet Seal, has seen outstanding daily growth, skyrocketing their weekly growth. This could be due to Sponsored Stories bought by the company or viral growth, but the page did see a spike in new Likes on July 8, which has impacted PTAT. The company, much like other fashion companies, have started spotlight their Instagram feed through a third party application. These posts see large engagement on Facebook in addition to the likes on Instagram.

Pages can now add location to their posts

Posted: 12 Jul 2012 11:10 AM PDT

Facebook recently added the option for page owners to tag their posts and photos with location.

There has not been an official announcement about the feature so it is unclear whether it has rolled out to all pages or if it is still being tested with a small group. For now, adding location to a post is useful for providing more context and telling a richer story, but there could be future changes that make location even more important to pages.

Similar to personal posts, if a page post doesn’t have a photo or link included with it, a map of the location will be included. This could help text posts get noticed in News Feed, but we don’t know whether including location has any effect on EdgeRank.

Pages do not yet have a map feature like personal Timelines do, so there isn’t an easy way to see all of a page’s location-tagged posts at once, but perhaps this is in the works. We wonder if Facebook will give pages even more functionality similar to personal Timelines, for example, adding Open Graph apps to share activity on behalf of the page. This would be useful for brands that are also active on networks like Instagram or Pinterest because they could display this activity within boxes on Timeline.

Location tagging could also be a part of a potential new ad product. We’ve heard that Facebook is working on a new real-time location-based advertising option. We don’t have details on how this will work, but it could possibly involve tagging page posts with location and promoting them as Sponsored Stories.

Page owners can tag their posts with location the same way they do on their personal profiles.

Page owners can also add location to photos they’ve previously uploaded.
